Is ours a world of greed when it should be a world of compassion?
Is ours a world at war when it should be a world at peace?
Are many of the rich getting richer in a way that is making the poor poorer?
Do you prefer the four words on the mace in the Scottish Parliament: Wisdom – Justice – Compassion – Integrity
to their four alternatives: Ignorance – Exploitation – Insensitivity – Hypocrisy?
Do you want to know more about the radical philosophers from your own perspective?
Do you believe that the lives and teachings of philosophers should be relevant to the lives and needs of those who explore them?
Do you believe that philosophy can be explored by all ages in a form relative to their needs, rather than their study being limited to academic students in a way that is relative to the interests of some who teach it in ivory towers?
Do you want to live philosophy through role-playing the philosophers and their friends themselves, identifying existentially with them rather than merely reading about them from a distance?
Then you have come to the right website – indeed, the only website that focuses on all the above.
So the latest news is that now many American students are turning to the study of philosophy, concerned by the militant religious fundamentalism that has been the cause of terrorism and by the response of a “crusade” through the war in Iraq initiated by neo-conservative politicians and their follows, and others perhaps pressured by the “special relationship” with Britain. “Obama for President!” is the cry of an increasing number of Americans who appreciate the fact that he alone of the candidates stood against the war from the beginning and has not wavered. Whatever your political views, do you want to explore the attitude of the radical enlightenment philosophers to war and to so much more?
Welcome to Living Philosophy.org.uk, the website of The Radicals. This drama group promotes the Scottish radical enlightenment. It promotes its heritage, particularly in the classics, and its legacy in David Hume and Adam Smith especially and those who have followed them in laying a new foundation of constructive but critical philosophy for creating a better world. Every performance of The Radicals begins with the lighting of a peace candle and the words, “I light this candle for Wisdom – Justice – Compassion – Integrity, the four words on the mace in the Scottish Parliament that are offered as the standard of the wisdom and integrity of the Scottish radical enlightenment – for a more just, a more compassionate and – thereby – a more peaceful world.” Each performance ends with the unfurling of the United Nations flag.
